Sebastian Fitzek and the art of selling fear

Walk past a Thalia shelf these days and you are bound to run into him: “Die Therapie” – Fitzek’s debut from 2006, reissued with that iconic straitjacket on the cover. A book that has long been a cult classic. And it is back in the spotlight for good reason: the adaptation for Amazon Prime immediately climbed to number 1 among the most-watched German-language series – and led a new generation of readers straight to where it all began.

The story: the psychiatrist Viktor Larenz loses his twelve-year-old daughter Josy – no witnesses, no traces, no body. Four years later, on a remote island, a woman he has never met seeks him out, tormented by delusions in which, again and again, a little girl vanishes without a trace. Viktor begins the therapy. And soon he can no longer tell who is treating whom.

Anna-Mariia Kostiuk, herself the author of novels that swing between reality and the uncanny, knows Fitzek’s work from her own reading. And as a writer she knows: what Fitzek can do is no small feat. He doesn’t write plots. He builds traps. Short chapters that work like doors – you open one, and the next is waiting behind it. The reader believes he is in control. He isn’t.

That is precisely the craft that counts.
